Two weeks ago our co-founder Bosko Petreski was part of the mentors list at NASA Space Apps Challenge in Skopje. Over the years we as G6 have tried to support this kind of innovative events in any way possible, so when we were asked to be mentors we were thrilled to accept this opportunity and work with the future macedonian astronauts.
The International Space Apps Challenge is world biggest hackathon that takes place over 48-hours in 130+ cities with aim to create open-source solutions for global needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space.
The event had over 100 people from Skopje gathered in 21 teams with between 4 and 10 members each. Ideas included printing 3D food in space and solving main issues generated from big expenses, identification and visualization of the current capacity and potential of countries to be self-sufficient in the provision of food for their populations, and system that solves the challenge that should set the astronauts free of all the ropes and tethers around them, and at the same time will solve the problem of releasing dangerous, uncontrolled, floating objects around their space station.
The winning team was Team Kokino. They were solving the Print Your Own Space Food challenge and managed to create a prototype of 3D food printer with development of an application for choosing food, drink and dessert and only by pressing “Print button” the food is ready for printing! The main reusable component of the hardware is cartridges. It is using vitamins, proteins, aroma and color and mixing them with marzipan.
The solution can easily manage all the issues with storage space, decreasing expenses, print of different variety of food and commercial use like solving world hunger.
From our perspective we salute the organization of this event, and congratulate them for bringing this kind of innovation into Macedonia, providing opportunities for young macedonian minds to develop amazing ideas.
For the teams (all the participants and the winners) we will suggest to continue working on their ideas, to educate themselves more, to update their so far learned skills and to never stop doing what they are capable of doing as we saw that weekend.
Hopefully we will see some of you guys landing on Mars!
