Book design (Part 1)

FIRST “BOOK”

The book began its journey about ten thousand years ago, as a CLAY TABLET in Samaria today known as Saudi Arabia. The Sumerians needed a way to keep records of their crops, so they began making clay tablets to write on. The simple form of writing, which was used by them is called CUNEIFORM. They used sticks to carve their message into the wet clay and leave them to dry in the sun afterwards.

FIRST “PRINTS”

Throughout the years, the CHINESE found that they were in need of a better and more practical material. So they began flattening palm leaves and make the first real sheets of paper. Eventually they developed a printmaking method called WOODCUT. This technique made it easier to create multiple impressions on the same page. After this development, they started gluing pages together and fold them into Books.

BOOK

The book is a visual and tangible form of art, where spoken words, stories are put together on a piece of paper and transformed into a unique form of style, format and design.

BOOK DESIGN

Every book has it’s own elements that can be divided in categories, so here are some helpful tips that you can use while designing a book.

TEXT

Choosing the right FONT for the text is very important for your book design. It always needs to be in harmony with the pictures and the illustrations to form unity with thewhole book.

Also the text should have hierarchy, it must have order and it needs different styles for the different types of body elements.

ILLUSTRATIONS, GRAPHICS, PHOTOES

The graphics, illustrations and photos that are part of a book, have their own unique shapes, lines and colors. Your job as a designer is to recognize and distinguish which of these unique elements are there and how to properly balance them. This eventually will result in having a consistent design.

CREATIVE DETAILS

Creative parts are very important, these are the ones who give style to your book. They decide the look of the book and give you a feeling what is the story about even before you read it. Because of that you must be careful what elements you choose, you don’t want to give a wrong perception of the book.
You have to make a full and terminal research, but most important is first to read the book, so you know the time period the book is written in . You can also use elements that are inspired from the characters that exist in the book and include parts of your own personal design style.

PAPER

The texture of the paper is a key part of designing a book . It gives the book tangible and material identity, which when it is in your hands it allows the story, besides the visual to have another dimension of existence.
